Nebraska National Guard honors professor, ‘a true patriot’

The Nebraska National Guard recently bestowed its Legion of Merit award to Bellevue University Professor Jon Kayne for his work with the Guard’s Peer Support Program. Kayne developed the course curriculum and has been the primary instructor for the program, which was established in 2005 to assist Guard members suffering from psychological trauma.

From August 2007 through June 2008, Kayne trained 194 peer support specialists within the Nebraska National Guard. These support specialists were then able to assist Guard members coping with trauma. The Nebraska National Guard initiated the program in 2005, after Hurricane Katrina, and contacted Kayne to design and oversee the training of the peer support specialists. Kayne, who teaches psychology and human services courses, has extensive experience in treating psychologial trauma, having worked with law enforcement professionals for many years.

Kayne himself is a former sheriff’s deputy who also at one time was a farmer in Israel, a social worker, the CEO of a business and a non-commissioned officers in the U.S. Army. Currently, besides teaching at Bellevue University, Kayne is a therapist in private practice and a trained Buddhist who spent time studying the religion in Thailand.

Now Kayne has another title, as his Legion of Merit award states: “true patriot.”

  1. I worked for Dr. Kayne as his assistant for 10 years and he was the best boss I have ever had and ever will. I have had some very good bosses during my 25 years as an executive assistant and he is always #1 on the list. I know he is very well deserving of this honor. Congratulations Kayne!
