Retired Lt. Gen. Patrick Hughes testifies before a Congressional Committee

Bellevue University on Sept. 5 will host the former director of the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency as part of a forum to explore national security issues and what the intelligence community has learned since 9/11.

Retired Army Lt. Gen. Patrick Hughes will deliver the keynote address at “The State of Security in the Heartland and Beyond: What We’ve Learned Since 9/11,” a free event open to the public that runs from 8:30 a.m. to noon, inside the university’s Hitchcock Humanities Center. Following his keynote address, Hughes will take part in a panel discussion on national security issues, along with former Intelligence Officer Anthony Campanella, who has consulted the White House, Joint Chiefs of Staff and Department of Defense. Questions from the audience are welcome.

Hughes served as assistant secretary for information analysis at the Department of Homeland Security from 2003 to 2005. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1999 after more than 35 years of military service. Aside from his time leading the Defense Intelligence Agency, his other positions included director of intelligence for the Joint Staff; director of intelligence, U.S. Central Command; commanding general, U.S. Army Intelligence Agency; and commander, 501st Military Intelligence Brigade. Currently, Hughes is corporate vice president for intelligence and counterterrorism at L-3 Communications, Inc., specializing in intelligence, security and international relations.
