Biernesser joins university as director of military programs

Bellevue University has hired James R. Biernesser, a retired Air Force colonel, as its new director of military programs. This new position was created to advise school officials on military matters as they relate to higher education. Biernesser serves as the university’s internal expert for developing, planning, coordinating and executing a systematic approach to all projects involving the military community.

Biernesser retired from the Air Force in 2007 after 30 years of service. In his last assignment as the deputy foreign affairs advisor at U.S. Strategic Command, he was the principle advisor to the foreign affairs advisor and, in his absence, served as the foreign affairs advisor to the commander of U.S. Strategic Command. Biernesser also was the commander’s principle advisor on military-to-military engagements, with special emphasis on the Russian Federation and Nation’s possession of nuclear weapons.

He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Maryland in 1977. In 1987, he earned his Master of Aeronautical Science from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.

Since its founding in 1966, Bellevue University has been a national leader in meeting the educational needs of the military adn those working on military issues. Today, the university remains one of the top 50 education providers to the Air Force, as well as a recognized leader in meeting the learning needs of all military personnel.

Recently, the university assembled the Offutt Community Advisory Board, a group of civilian and retired military leaders that advises school officials on the evolving educational, training and development needs of the Offutt Air Force Base Community. In his new role, Biernesser will work closely with this group, which meets quarterly.
