18th annual high school quiz bowl is March 6

The 18th annual Bellevue University Invitational Quiz Bowl is Friday, March 6, on the university’s main campus, with the championship round scheduled for 3 p.m. inside the Hitchcock Humanities Center’s Criss Auditorium. This year’s quiz bowl features teams from 24 area high schools.

Schools participating in the 2009 quiz bowl are: Bellevue East, Bellevue West, Bennington, Blair, Centennial, Clarinda, Columbus, Conestoga, Daniel J. Gross, East Butler, Elkhorn, Fremont-Mills, Gretna, Lincoln Northeast, Louisville, Norfolk, Norris, Omaha Christian Academy, Platteview, Plattsmouth, Ralston, Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson, Westside, Woodbine.

Each member of the first-place team receives a $1,500 scholarship to Bellevue University, as well as a traveling trophy. Members of the second-place team receive $1,000 Bellevue University scholarships, and members of the third-place team receive $750 scholarships.

The double-elimination competition begins at 9 a.m. inside the university’s Hitchcock Humanities Center. Each team consists of four competing members and one alternate. Each game lasts 20 minutes or long enough for 50 toss-up questions, whichever comes first.

Quiz bowl competitors use buzzers, and once they “buzz in,” they have five seconds to answer the question. Questions cover math, science, history, literature and language.

Bellevue University’s main campus is located at 1000 Galvin Road South, Bellevue.
